CCPC warns of online scams impersonating Dublin Zoo
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is warning consumers of a number of online scams which appear to impersonate Dublin Zoo either through social media posts or through fraudulent website links.
The social media posts often appear with images or videos featuring fake Dublin Zoo-branded content. Some posts offer free gifts or free back-to-school packs asking consumers to pay €2-€3 postage.
The alert follows engagement with Dublin Zoo, which brought the suspected scams to the CCPC’s attention. More information can be found at Visitor Notice - Dublin Zoo.
Aoibhín de Búrca, Director of Communications for the CCPC, said:
“Scammers are getting smarter every day. They are taking advantage of busy consumers and using established businesses with recognisable branding to create fake social media ads and clone websites.
“We know it is getting harder to spot scams online, which is why pausing before you hit pay is more important than ever. Do not click on social media ads directly or enter payment details without doing a thorough search to make sure you’re on an authentic website. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
Stay safe when shopping online
When shopping online, consumers should always remain vigilant as scammers frequently use convincing clones of trusted websites to trick shoppers.
Stop: Scammers often create urgency to pressure quick decisions. If something feels off or too good to be true, stop and think before engaging further.
Search: Remember that logos, “about us” pages and imagery on websites can be fabricated.
Stay safe: Watch out for common red flags, including unusually large discounts or free gifts.
If you think you’ve been scammed, contact your bank or payment provider immediately. You may be able to initiate a chargeback and get your money back, and you may need to freeze your card to prevent further money being taken.
