What are the dangers of window blind cords and chains?

Cords and chains on window blinds and curtains can be a hidden danger to young children, especially those under the age of three. There have been deaths caused by children becoming entangled in loose cords and chains. It is important to spot these dangers and take steps to remove them.

The main risk comes from loops in cords or chains that are within a child’s reach. A child can get caught in these loops and may be strangled.

Always check for loops and make sure they are secured with a chain tidy or fitted with a chain break device. Keep all cords and chains out of reach of children and at least 1.6 metres above the ground. Make sure furniture is not placed near windows or doors, as a child could climb up and reach the cord or chain.

Remember to check blinds and curtains in other homes where your child spends time, such as a grandparent’s or childminder’s house.

How can you make window blinds and curtains safer for children?

  • Move beds, cots, and furniture away from windows and doors
  • Keep cords and chains out of reach of children – they should end at least 1.6 metres above the ground
  • Make your existing blinds or curtains safe
  • You can cut the cord to remove the loop
  • If the cord or chain cannot be cut, install a safety device such as a chain tidy, tension device, or a breakaway device that snaps apart when pressure is applied
  • Choose new blinds or curtains that do not have cords or chains
  • Ask the shop if the blind meets the safety standard EN 13120:2009+A1:2014
  • Check that the blind includes a safety device such as a breakaway device, accumulation device, non-tangling device, inner cord stops, or a tensioning device to keep cords out of reach. Make sure the safety device meets standards EN 16433:2014 and EN 16434:2014 and is fitted when the blind is installed
  • Make sure written instructions for assembly, installation, use, and maintenance are provided, and follow them if you are installing the blind yourself

These tips can help protect your child from serious harm. Using proper safety devices can reduce the risk of strangulation, but nothing is completely risk-free. Always keep window blind cords and chains out of reach of children and follow all safety instructions provided.
