Summary
The CCPC commissioned Ipsos MRBI to conduct research on consumer travel and holiday planning in Ireland and abroad in 2021. Research was carried across a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults between 30 April – 11 May 2021.Publication details

Summary findings include:
- 7 in 10 (73%) consumers are proactively making travel plans, both at home and abroad in 2021.
- ‘Staycations’ was found to be the most popular choice for majority (62%) of consumers surveyed.
- 1 in 5 (20%) consumers surveyed are planning a holiday abroad in 2021.
- 1 in 4 (24%) consumers surveyed have already booked a holiday for 2021, highest among those age 45-54 (30%).
- Of those who have already booked, almost 1 in 5 (18%) consumers have already booked a ‘staycation’, while (6%) said they had already booked a foreign holiday.
- A further 2 in 5 (44%) consumers said they were planning a ‘staycation’, with a further 1 in 5 (20%) planning international travel later this year.
- 4 in 10 (42%) consumers cancelled travel plans in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with just over 10% of consumers losing money as a result.
- Among consumers who have already booked, or are planning to book holidays abroad this year, the majority (81%) prefer to build a ‘DIY holiday’, where they book each element of their trip themselves. This is compared to 1 in 5 (20%) consumers who prefer a package holiday option, highest among those aged 65+ (31%).
