Recommendations and outcomes
Our study made two recommendations:
- The accreditation system for engineering degrees should be more open and transparent to facilitate entry into the profession. This concern was resolved by the Institute of Engineers of Ireland (now called Engineers Ireland).
- No further regulation should be imposed on the engineering profession without the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government carrying out a Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA).
An RIA is a comprehensive analysis of all the options available to regulators and legislators to address a problem, and the potential impact, both positive and negative, of each option. There has been no requirement for an RIA yet.
