Scrolling Smart: Check Before You Click
March 17, 2026
Being online is part of everyday life from chatting with friends to shopping, watching videos, and scrolling through social media. But as we spend more time online, scammers are getting smarter too. They use fake ads, websites and social media accounts as well as phishing messages to try to steal your money or personal info.
Scammers often try to create a sense of urgency to push you into acting quickly. If something feels off or too good to be true, pause and check before you click.
If you think you’ve been targeted by a scam:
- Stop replying, clicking or engaging.
- Contact your bank or card provider right away, they may be able to freeze your account or reverse charges.
- Report it to An Garda Síochána to help stop the scammers targeting others.
- Report misleading websites or practices to the CCPC. We are responsible for enforcing the rules around advertising of goods and services in Ireland. We can take action against businesses that we find have misled consumers.
How to Protect Yourself Online
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
- Don’t save your card details on random websites.
- Never share personal information in response to a message you didn’t expect.
- Always research a company or seller before buying.
- Think before you click any link asking for bank or card details.
Pause, check, think! A few smart habits can help protect your money and personal information so you can stay safe while you scroll.
