Have a safe Halloween without any real scares

October 1, 2025

You don’t need a sixth sense to avoid a fright night this Halloween. Follow these simple steps to make sure your little horrors terrify your neighbours, have loads of fun, and come back safe and sound to enjoy their treats.

1. Check for the CE mark. Children’s Halloween masks and costumes are classed as toys, and all toys are required to have a CE mark. This can either be on the packaging or on the item itself. If it doesn’t have a CE mark, don’t buy it.

2. Safe props and accessories: Props and accessories that are designed for children’s Halloween costumes, must also carry the CE mark. If you plan on using other accessories or props, think very carefully about how suitable they are, because they may not be safe.

3. Small parts: Even props and accessories that carry the CE mark might not be suitable for under 3s, particularly ones that have small detachable parts. And if you are decorating the house, remember that anything smaller than a €2 coin could be a choking hazard.

4. Avoid lighting candles: You can create the right atmosphere with battery operated candles, which prevents the risk of your child’s costume catching fire.

5. Beware of strings and cords: Don’t use fixed cords or strings in the head, neck or chest area. Only use them if they are attached with Velcro or a snap fastener and can break away easily.

6. Be wary of oversized costumes, long dresses and capes. Vampires rising from the grave is great, but vampires falling back in again is to be avoided.

7. Don’t go as the Invisible Man: Drivers still need to see your child, so add some bright or reflective clothing.
