What is Global Money Week

March 15, 2024

Global Money week (GMW) is a world-wide awareness raising campaign, organised by the OECD/INFE on the importance of ensuring that young people are financially aware. This year, GMW takes place from the 18-24 March 2024.

During GMW, children and young people have the opportunity to learn the necessary money management skills to make sound future financial decisions, and ultimately achieve financial well-being and resilience.

Ireland has been involved in GMW since 2014.  For the 12th edition of GMW, The Competition & Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) will be Ireland’s GMW Coordinator.

Global Money Week 2024 was opened by Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union at European Commission, Mairead McGuinness.

Let’s have a look at what is happening for GMW 2024!

Protect your money, secure your future

The official slogan for GMW is “Learn. Save. Earn”. GMW hopes to empower young people to manage their money wisely, save for their futures and earn for both themselves and their families.

GMW has a different theme each year. This year the theme is “Protect your money, secure your future”.

This image shows the dates that Global Money Week will be running.

The theme focuses on encouraging young people to safely manage their money. The main aim is for young people to become informed of the risks and threats that exist to their money.

GMW Ireland daily themes and organisations

Along with this overarching theme, during GMW 2024, the CCPC will have a different daily theme to highlight how to protect your money and secure your future.

  • Monday 18 March: Launch of GMW
  • Tuesday 19 March: Saving, investing and pensions
  • Wednesday 20 March: Knowing your rights
  • Thursday 21 March: Fraud and scams
  • Friday 22 March: Schools programmes

For 2024, there will be a number of organisations in Ireland bringing this theme to life.

These include:

What’s next?

For GMW this year, young people across Ireland will learn from the various participating organisations about everything from savings and taxes to cryptocurrencies and scams, through podcasts, webinars, quizzes, workshops and school visits.
