- The EAA aims to make certain products and services more accessible
- Products include computers, smartphones, ATMs and smart televisions
- Services include e-commerce and e-books
- CCPC has been designated as the market surveillance authority for all products under the EAA and the compliance authority for some services
The European Accessibility Act (EAA), which aims to benefit both consumers and businesses comes into effect on Saturday, 28 June 2025.
The new law is the first European directive of its kind and establishes accessibility requirements that will make it easier for disabled people to use. Products covered under the EAA include computers, ATMs, smartphones, some self-service ticketing machines, e-readers, and smart televisions.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has been designated as the market surveillance authority for all products under the EAA and the compliance authority for e-commerce and e-books.
This means that businesses that offer these products or services must comply with the relevant accessibility requirements for their products or service.
Compliance with the EAA will give businesses common rules on accessibility, giving them more market opportunities, easier cross-border trading, and cost reductions.
The CCPC advises businesses to ensure they comply with the EAA and will provide support and guidance to help companies, especially microenterprises, understand and meet their obligations.
The CCPC has been working closely with the National Disability Authority to prepare for the EAA, including developing guidelines specifically for microenterprises.
In April, the CCPC launched a public consultation inviting feedback on these guidelines and provided information for businesses on how to notify the CCPC of non-compliance or claimed exemptions, as well as guidance for consumers on making complaints.
