Nursing home contracts – what you need to know

May 15, 2019

The decision to move into a nursing home is a significant one that is often made with urgency and in stressful circumstances. Nursing home services are by their nature expensive and for many people there are limited options to choose from.

Given these specific circumstances, it is essential that residents are given all of the necessary information they need to make an informed decision before they commit to a contract.

When you move to a nursing home, you will need to sign up to a contract of care. These are often standard form contracts. This means the terms are generally set already, and are not negotiated by you individually.  Under consumer protection law, your contract should set out the terms in plain and understandable English, and you should not be bound by unfair terms.

We have developed a booklet to help answer your questions or concerns regarding a nursing home contract of care. We also have more information to help you understand what your obligations are, and those of the nursing home.

If you need to make a formal complaint to a nursing home, we have a template letter you can use, and also a sample letter that you can use as a guide.
